Recent Accomplishments

2011

The Lost Forest project is back. For more information click here.

We are active in the Cook County Invasive Team and the North Shore Forest Collaborative. Both of these efforts are vital to the restoration of the North Shore Forest.

We provided invasive plant species educational workshops in both Cook and Lake Counties during the summers of 2010 and 2011. Find out more.

A new bridge was installed at Sugarloaf Cove. Now you can follow a pleasant trail through the woods from the parking lot to the building.

Margie Menzies joined us as our new naturalist. Visit our calendar page for upcoming programs at the Cove or sign up for email updates on our home page.

2012

We have big plans for the nature center. We have received a grant to build a new exhibit and we plan on purchasing new tables and chairs. If you would like to sponsor a table with chairs, please contact Molly at 218-525-0001 or sugarloaf@boreal.org.

We are wrapping up our Lost Forest program with a trail building workshop and a workshop for North Shore landowners this spring. Watch our calendar page for more information or sign up for email updates on our home page.

We will be producing a series of YouTube videos about forest restoration for North Shore landowners.

Past Sugarloaf projects

  • The Learning Cart program offered interpretive activities to North Shore parks and waterfronts from Duluth to Grand Portage. The Learning Cart educator engaged the general public in short, fun learning activities about the natural and cultural history of Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior.

However, the core of our operations remains Sugarloaf Cove. Sugarloaf Cove is the only privately funded nature center located on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, renowned for its geological features and its beauty. The site is opened to visitors throughout the year with staff on site during June-October.
